Foundation commits $200,000 to help affected communities
When your community is hit by a natural disaster, you often lose access to essentials — shelter, food, water — even health information and critical medicines. We’ve long supported disaster relief efforts to help people get what they need when impacted by disasters, and we’re again reaching out to help in the aftermath of Hurricanes Fiona and Ian.
“People hit by these storms have seen their lives change in an instant,” said Cynthia Cardona, associate vice president of social impact for Lilly and president of the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation, Inc. (Lilly Foundation). “Lilly and the Lilly Foundation both have a strong history of caring for our communities in times of crisis and we will continue to do so with these recent hurricanes.”
The Lilly Foundation recently announced a grant of $100,000 to the United Way of Puerto Rico for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico, where Lilly has a significant presence with two manufacturing facilities and a number of employees, who are all accounted for and safe at this time — as are Lilly employees in Florida and other southeastern states who were in the path of Hurricane Ian.
After Hurricane Ian made landfall and the devastation became apparent, the Lilly Foundation committed another $100,000, split among three separate nonprofit organizations to support disaster recovery efforts: American National Red Cross, the United Way of Florida (United Way of Florida Disaster Relief Fund) and United Way Worldwide (United Way Disaster Response and Recovery Fund).
Additionally, Lilly employees will have their donations to the American Red Cross and other eligible organizations matched by the Lilly Foundation.
Disaster Preparedness
While part of any disaster response takes place after a hurricane – Lilly works with nonprofit organizations that offer disaster relief resources to help prepare and ensure medicines are available in times of emergency.
Before these most recent hurricanes struck, Lilly provided insulins and other medicines to Direct Relief’s Hurricane Preparedness Program, which pre-positions Hurricane Prep Packs to health centers in hurricane zones throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. Direct Relief is already shipping supplies as needed to help people in Florida, who depend on insulin every day to live.
