Our Impact

We work every day with the goal of growing our business in responsible and sustainable ways that better people’s lives and benefit society.

Our impact starts with the purpose of our business: to create medicines that make life better. We’re committed to expanding equitable access to medicines for more people around the world, and we are working to improve public health for vulnerable people living in areas with limited resources. We further extend our impact by strengthening communities and addressing social issues – like racial justice and education – that matter to our business, employees and society.

And when there’s a health crisis, like COVID-19, Lilly steps up for the common good. Because it’s the right thing to do.

Building on our purpose, we focus our impact efforts on five key areas:

CREATE MEDICINES THAT MAKE LIFE BETTER
Increase Access to Medicines
Improve Lives and Communities
Empower a Diverse Workforce
Minimize our Environmental Impact
Operate Ethically and Responsibly

Across these areas, we set and measure challenging goals to continually improve what we do – and how we do it. We discuss those goals throughout this section and website. See Lilly’s ESG Report for detailed information about our social impact and environmental, social and governance work.

At the Heart of Our Impact Is Our Purpose.

We unite caring with discovery to create medicines that make life better for people around the world. Over 47 million people count on Lilly medicines each year. In the nearly 150 years we’ve been in business, we’ve developed and delivered trusted medicines that help people get better, feel better and live better.

That’s Why We’re Dedicated to Increasing Access to Medicines.

Too many people, especially the most vulnerable, lack access to the medicines and care they need. Reaching across industry boundaries, we collaborate with leading health organizations, providers, regulators and governments to find new solutions that help address access challenges and strengthen health care systems.

Improving Access to Quality Healthcare for 30 Million People by 2030

We have established a comprehensive goal - Lilly 30x30 - to improve access to quality health care for 30 million people living in communities with limited resources, annually by 2030.

We’re Improving Lives and Communities.

We invest our time, expertise and resources to drive social impact, with a focus on improving health, education and racial justice. We encourage our employees to volunteer and give in ways that advance our purpose and are meaningful to them.

We’re Empowering a Diverse Workforce.

Diversity, equity and inclusion are fundamental to our company strategy. When Lilly people come to work each day, we bring different experiences, perspectives and traditions. Lilly is committed to welcoming, respecting and valuing that which makes each of us unique. As a major employer, we also take action on racial justice issues that affect our employees, business and communities.

Three long-established core values guide all that we do at Lilly.

We’re Minimizing Our Environmental Impact.

Making medicines requires the use of valuable resources including energy, water and raw materials. We’re committed to continually improving our environmental impact across our product life cycles and supply chain. We have set new sustainability goals to reduce our emissions and waste and to continue using water responsibly and efficiently.
